Segeyaro to fight drug charges

James Segeyaro’s lawyer says the fight to clear his name has just begun following the suspended NRL star’s meeting with ASADA officials.

The NRL confirmed in early October the off-contract PNG international had returned a positive A-sample for Ligandrol while playing for Brisbane.

Sporting an ACDC top, a relaxed Segeyaro and sports lawyer Tim Fuller spent nearly three hours in a preliminary meeting with ASADA in Brisbane on Thursday.

The journeyman hooker told journalists he was “happy with how it went” and “wasn’t too sure” what the next step was as he left the meeting.

Fuller told News Corp on Sunday it was a case of unintentional and inadvertent doping and that there were mitigating circumstances that would be the basis of Segeyaro’s defence.

“He was very co-operative, provided substantial assistance to ASADA,” Fuller told journalists.

He said a date for the hearing had not been set.

“It was a good interview process; there’s a fair way to go in this legislative process but we’ll take the next step and see how we go,” Fuller said.

Segeyaro, 28, is facing a suspension of up to four-years for testing positive to the same substance as Australian swimmer Shayna Jack.
