Sharks pair firm for must-win NRL clash

Cronulla stars Shaun Johnson and Matt Moylan are on track to play in Sunday’s do-or-die clash with the Wests Tigers, according to prop Andrew Fifita.

Johnson (quad) was on Tuesday listed in the run-on side, however Moylan (hamstring) was named on an extended bench.

Both players will train in the team’s field session on Thursday afternoon, and the club will be banking on both pulling up strongly on Friday.

Fifita said the playing group had enjoyed a light week in training ahead of what shapes as a gripping contest at Leichhardt Oval.

“They’re training really well. I was with them at the pool (on Wednesday) and everything was fine,” Fifita said on Thursday.

“I think it’s a bit of a down-week for most players here, as we prep in and trying to freshen us all up for this weekend. It’s going to be a really good week.

“We’ll do scrimmage tonight and they’ll be all on deck ready to roll.”

Moylan, who has played just 11 games this year, hasn’t played since round 22 after aggravating a hamstring injury that has plagued him for most of the season.

Johnson was a late withdrawal from last week’s golden point loss to Canberra after hurting his quad in the warm-up.

His goalkicking could be critical for a Sharks after back-up playmaker Kyle Flanagan missed all three of their shots against the Raiders, costing them victory.

Flanagan is once against on standby, while Ronaldo Mulitalo is expected to be cut from the starting line-up should Moylan prove his fitness.

“We just want everyone to be at 100 per cent. I think if the boys are right, they’ll be very handy to have on there,” teammate Kurt Capewell said.

“Not only experience, but they’re obviously two great attacking players.

“Flanno done a terrific job when he had to fill in. But the combination that (Briton Nikora) and Shaun have is pretty handy. To get Shauny back would be huge.

“And to throw Matt Moylan into our team just provides so much.”
