Shoulder injury rules Makinson out of tour

St Helens winger Tom Makinson is to be ruled out of the Great Britain tour after suffering a dislocated shoulder in his side’s Super League grand final triumph.

The 28-year-old won the Golden Boot as international player of the year in 2018 on the back of a superb Test series against the Kiwis and was certain to be included in coach Wayne Bennett’s 24-man squad for the tour of New Zealand and Papua New Guinea.

However he expects to miss the trip after damaging his shoulder during Saints’ 23-6 win over Salford at Old Trafford.

“I dislocated my shoulder and popped it back in but I think that’s me sadly out until next year,” Makinson said.

“They wanted to bring me off but I’m not coming off, it’s the grand final.

“Once it pops out, you’re struggling, aren’t you? There’s usually a bit of damage. I’ll get it scanned and see what it’s like but I think I’ll miss the tour.”
