South Sydney Rabbitohs vs Manly Sea Eagles Preview

South Sydney Rabbitohs are back in business, while Manly Sea Eagles are in the Top 8 after carving out some gutsy recent wins, however both teams are missing key personnel ahead of this Saturday night showdown at Homebush.

The Rabbitohs’ diabolical 1-9 start is fading into the background courtesy of three straight wins over Parramatta (42-26), Gold Coast (46-12) and Brisbane (22-12).

Latrell Mitchell has been the fulcrum of the turnaround, but a vastly improved defensive attitude in the past fortnight – after leaking 26-plus points in 10 of their first 11 games – has been just as vital.

Jye Gray comes back in at fullback for NSW saviour Mitchell, while Liam Le Blanc gets an NRL debut with Cameron Murray called up by the Blues.

The Sea Eagles have bookended a loss at Penrith with home victories over Melbourne (26-20) and St George Illawarra (30-14).

Last week’s defeat of the Dragons were especially memorable, trailing at halftime with an empty bench but scoring four tries to one in the second stanza. Teenager Lehi Hopoate has been a revelation at fullback.

Daly Cherry-Evans, Jake Trbojevic and Haumole Olakau’atu are on Origin duty, and Taniela Paseka and Reuben Garrick are out injured.

Karl Lawton slots in at halfback, Aaron Schoupp makes his Manly debut in the centres, and Gordon Chan Kum Tong, Aitasi James, Ben Condon and debutant Caleb Navale make up an all-new bench.

Manly snapped a seven-match losing streak against Souths with a memorable 36-24 victory in the Las Vegas double-header.

But the Sea Eagles haven’t beaten the Rabbitohs at Accor Stadium since the 2013 preliminary final.

The Sea Eagles boast just a win and a draw from their last seven matches away from Brookvale. The Rabbitohs are 3-3 at Accor Stadium this year, racking up 88 points in their last two.

Luke Brooks is the player that has to step up for depleted Manly and while Souths’ dual Origin absentees can’t be downplayed, there’s less disruption to their line-up and a new spring in the Rabbitohs’ step.

Six of the teams’ last seven clashes have gone over the total match points line.
