Storm captain Smith fit for NRL trial

Melbourne Storm captain Cameron Smith has confirmed he will play in the NRL club’s final pre-season trial game against the Brisbane Broncos in Hobart on Saturday.

Smith had been in doubt after injuring his shoulder at training in January but said he had coped well with contact training on Tuesday, which prompted coach Craig Bellamy to clear him to play.

Fellow stars Billy Slater and Cooper Cronk also were certain starters for the match, with Slater having recovered from a broken collarbone.

Smith said he had been keen to play in the club’s previous trial match against Canberra last weekend, but Bellamy decided it was not worth the risk.

“He erred on the side of caution there and gave me another week to get ready,” Smith said.

“We had to do some contact work today.

“I had to get through it and if I passed I was allowed to play.

“I came through all right, I didn’t feel anything at all, so I’m really looking forward to getting a game in before the season opener.”

Smith said it was important for his own preparation that he was able to play on Saturday.

But he said it was equally important that his teammates would get the chance to rehearse their game style with him in the side.

The Broncos also plan on playing a strong team.

Smith said the result of the match was not important but the Storm needed to play a style of game they were happy with, to give them confidence ahead of their March 3 season opener against Canberra.
