Storm flyer ‘ideal’ for NSW: Bellamy

Melbourne flyer Ryan Papenhuyzen is the “ideal” candidate to be NSW’s State of Origin supersub in the opinion of Storm coach Craig Bellamy.

Papenhuyzen fired the Storm into an NRL preliminary final with a best on ground display against Parramatta in Saturday’s 36-24 win over the Eels at Suncorp Stadium.

The 22-year-old scored two tries, had a hand in four more, ran over 225 metres and had four tackle busts in an all-action display.

While the Blues fullback spot is sewn up with Sydney Roosters superstar James Tedesco a lock for the No.1 jersey, Bellamy believes a utilty role off the bench is well suited to Papenhuyzen’s speed and workrate.

“That’s where he started with us and we used to put him on for 10 minutes before halftime and play him in the ruck,” the ex-Blues coach said.

“He’ll put his head in there to make the tackles and then he adds a bit of speed.

“He’d be ideal for that spot if that’s what the Blues want.

“If Freddy’s (NSW coach Brad Fittler) looking for a guy to come on and add some pace and still not shirk away from if he has to make some tackles, he’s the ideal bloke.”

Fittler chose four forwards – Paul Vaughan, Dale Finucane, Cameron Murray and Wade Graham – on the bench for last year’s series clinching game three win over Queensland.

But he indicated Papenhuyzen was firmly in his plans as an impact sub in July with this year’s series to be played under the one-referee model and six-again rule.

Fittler is expected to name the final 22 players for his extended 27-man squad for November’s series in coming weeks.
