Storm’s Finucane welcome NRL challenges

Successive matches against top four NRL sides sounds the stuff of nightmares for many players but Melbourne workhorse Dale Finucane says bring it on.

The ladder leaders host third-placed Canberra at AAMI Park on Saturday afternoon with both teams welcoming back key players.

Storm strike weapons Jahrome Hughes and Ryan Papenhuyzen are on deck while centre Joey Leilua will make a long-waited return from injury for the Raiders.

Three games clear at the top of the NRL ladder on 36 points with four games to play, Craig Bellamy’s men are all but assured of the minor premiership with a victory.

Having edged the fourth-placed South Sydney last round, Finucane said they couldn’t ask for better preparation for the looming NRL finals.

“It’s a tough run home for us with another tough contest in the Raiders,” Finucane said on Wednesday.

“You want to be playing these style games heading into the back end of the year to know what you’re going to be up against come finals.

“Souths gave us a good gauge of where we are at and Canberra will too.”

Finucane said there was no question Melbourne could go to another level to win the NRL title, after failing in last year’s grand final.

NRL guru Phil Gould recently stated they wouldn’t be 2019 premiers because “they don’t have another gear”.

“There’s always room for improvement,” Finucane said.

“We can always refine our attack.

“We’ve been quite strong defensively throughout the year and I think our for and against justifies that but I do think there are areas for improvement in attack and hopefully we can find that.

“While we’ve been playing consistently, we want to hit our straps for the next four weeks heading into finals.”

Finucane won’t be putting his hand up for a game off to freshen up before the NRL finals.

The Storm’s Origin contingent were rested for their round 18 clash with Gold Coast and they face the lowly Titans again next round but newly-minted NSW representative Finucane says he doesn’t need a break.

“My body is feeling good but I’m probably a bit different from the others as I only played two of the three games and only 40-45 minutes in each game while they played 80 minutes in all three,” Finucane said.
