St Helens remain unbeaten after easing to a comfortable 26-0 Super League victory over the London Broncos.
Saints are now alone atop the table after Castleford lost to Warrington on Thursday, with former Sydney Roosters assistant Justin Holbrook’s side two points clear of the Tigers and Wolves after five rounds.
London had claimed a shock victory over champions Wigan in their last outing but despite a magnificent defensive effort never looked like producing another upset against a Saints side without talisman James Roby.
Saints claimed five tries through Dom Peyroux, Theo Fages, Regan Grace, Kevin Naiqama and Lachlan Coote, who also kicked three goals.
Saints rested Man of Steel leader Roby and used Aaron Smith at hooker, while Naiqama returned after missing the previous week.
London made the worst possible start when the opening kick failed to go 10 metres. Saints took full advantage as Fages sent Peyroux over in the opening minute.
The Broncos recovered and managed to keep their line intact despite being under pressure.
But Saints finally broke through on 23 minutes when Coote’s long pass allowed Grace to race over in the corner and seven minutes before half time, they claimed a third try when Zeb Taia burst through and offloaded to Fages to cross.
Saints found a way through again on the hour thanks to Fages who sent Coote racing clear under the posts and they completed the win when Naiqama crossed three minutes from time.
“I thought we controlled the game and had to play with a lot of patience as there was a lot of slowing the game down and a lot of penalties,” Holbrook said.
“We were unlucky and could have scored another four or five tries but to their credit they kept turning up.”
Hull’s revival continued as they put David Furner’s beleaguered Leeds to the sword 34-10 at home.
Young centre Harry Newman opened the scoring and Tom Briscoe made it a dream start for the Rhinos when he went over in the corner.
But Hull ruthlessly exposed the visitors in defence as they ran in five tries in little over 15 minutes through Ratu Naulago, Masi Matongo, Marc Sneyd, Jamie Shaul and Albert Kelly.
Dean Hadley scored the only try of the second half with the points already in the bag for Hull.
Huddersfield recorded their first win of the season, 14-6 over defending champions Wigan at DW Stadium.
The Warriors looked weak in defence and clueless in attack as they crashed to their fourth successive defeat.
