Sydney Roosters vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview
Sydney Roosters went into their second bye last weekend ebbing about as low as at any stage during Trent Robinson’s decade at the helm.
Slipping to 11th courtesy of five losses in their last seven games, a 48-4 beatdown at the hands of Penrith and a last-minute 24-22 defeat to beleaguered St George Illawarra handed the Tricolours three straight defeats.
The silver lining in the latter were the five-star displays from Luke Keary and James Tedesco to all but get the Roosters over the line, but under-fire big guns Brandon Smith and Victor Radley are now on the sidelines in the wake of the Dragons encounter.
Tedesco and Lindsay Collins have been named to back up from Origin, while Jared Waerea-Hargreaves and Joey Manu are on course to return from injury.
Radley’s suspension sees Nat Butcher start, while Smith is sidelined with a broken thumb. Junior Pauga makes his club debut on the wing.
Canterbury stayed afloat in the finals race with just their second win in seven games in Round 12, courageously clawing back from 14-0 down to pip Gold Coast 20-18 at home with a late try,
Josh Addo-Carr made a tryscoring return from injury, while Tevita Pangai Jr and Matt Burton swung the match in the Bulldogs’ favour.
The 5-7 Bulldogs’ two Origin players, Addo-Carr and Pangai Jr, are named in the reserves with Blake Wilson and Ryan Sutton to start if the Blues stars don’t back up while Josh Reynolds gets a bench recall.
The Bulldogs’ 16-12 upset of the Roosters in Round 8 laset year ended an eight-match losing streak in the rivalry, only three of the teams’ last 11 matches were decided by more than eight points.
The strongest case that can be made for the embattled Roosters in this one is that it has to turn around at some point…surely.
But the Bulldogs are getting a double-digit start here and look great value, certain to trouble the Roosters with their natural exuberance.
