Sydney Roosters vs Canterbury Bulldogs Preview

Sydney Roosters and Canterbury Bulldogs square off for the second time in 2024 – and the winner at Gosford on Saturday night could finish the weekend nestled inside the top four.

The Bulldogs have already knocked over the Roosters this year – albeit in a bizarre encounter in Round 5.

They raced out to an 18-0 lead and Roosters winger Dom Young was sent off in the first half, but the Bulldogs almost blew it before hanging on 30-26.

It was just the Bulldogs’ second win in their last 11 games against the Roosters – and the beginning of their remarkable charge up the ladder after a 1-3 start to the season.

Since then, the Bulldogs have chalked up five more wins and three narrow losses.

Prior to the Round 15 bye, they thrashed the Dragons 44-12 and Knights 32-2, and edged out the Eels 22-18 in successive weeks.

The Roosters have been stuck in a win-loss pattern for their past five games, bouncing back from a disappointing 18-16 loss to North Queensland prior to the Origin series opener by beating Parramatta 28-18 last weekend after their Round 14 bye.

The Roosters’ Lindsay Collins, Angus Crichton, Spencer Leniu and Connor Watson, and the Bulldogs’ Stephen Crichton are in Origin camp.

Dom Young returns from injury with Junior Pauga going to centre due to Michael Jennings’ injuryu.

Jared Waerea-Hargreaves, Brandon Smith and Terrell May are an all-new front-row, Nat Butcher starts in the second-row, and Blake Steep, Sitili Tupouniua and Siua Wong join the Roosters’ bench.

Jacob Kiraz goes to centre for the Bulldogs with Jeral Skelton playing his first NRL match of 2024 on the wing.

Josh Curran (head knock) is back in time to replace the injured Jacob Preston, Jake Turpin and Poasa Faamausili come onto the bench, and Kurt Mann is out.

The Bulldogs boast the NRL’s second-best defence and are shooting for four straight wins for the first time since 2019.

The Roosters have conceded at least 16 points in their last 11 games, but the Tricolours are on a four-match winning streak on the Central Coast.

The Roosters’ class in the spine is impossible to ignore, but the Bulldogs have announced themselves as the real deal and have covered in their last four against the inner-city heavyweights.
