Titans NRL struggles a mystery to Proctor

Gold Coast captain Kevin Proctor says the Titans poor NRL form has him puzzled given the lift in intensity and effort in training since Garth Brennan’s sacking.

Last Saturday’s 40-28 defeat to St George Illawarra at Kogarah was the fourth defeat on the bounce for the Titans since Brennan was ousted in mid-July.

In that period the Titans have conceded 170 points and with just four wins in 2019 are almost certain to pick up the club’s second wooden spoon in eight years.

That previous last-placed season, in 2011, is the worst in Titans history with just six wins.

Even to match that tally, Proctor and his teammates will have to win two of their last four fixtures.

“I don’t know what it is because the quality at training has been so much better but it just hasn’t really clicked for us yet,” the Kiwi international said.

“We’re being beaten by 40 and 50 the last couple of weeks … I was thinking how am I going to keep the boys upbeat and still motivated?

“But the boys have been great at training, they haven’t sooked about it or whinged too much.

“They’ve got in there, ripped in, worked hard and that’s the only way we’re going to change it. It’s been a really good attitude from the boys.”

With the club unlikely to be able to afford a player clear-out at the end of the season, new coach Justin Holbrook will have to turn around the Titans’ fortunes in 2020 with largely the same squad as this year.

Proctor is confident however the current ladder position doesn’t reflect the true quality at Holbrook’s disposal.

“I reckon we’ve got the squad to do it, we just haven’t been doing it,” he said.

“I’m not too sure what they’re going to do with the squad or who they’re going to move on … I just want to try and finish off this year as well as we can and try and get a few wins on the board.”
