Toovey calm ahead of ASADA interview

Manly coach Geoff Toovey doesn’t seem too concerned by his impending interview with ASADA officials, confident the NRL club has nothing to hide in relation to its sports science practices.

With the focus seemingly shifting back to the Sea Eagles following reports back-rower Anthony Watmough joined Cronulla captain Paul Gallen in having his mobile phone seized by Customs officials, Toovey said he had no fears heading into his meeting with the anti-drug agency.

Toovey admitted he had yet to be interviewed, simply saying “it’s coming up”, but denied the meeting was playing on his mind.

“It’s going to be really short, I haven’t got too much to say,” Toovey said of his preparedness for the interview.

“Obviously they’ve got a process to follow and the club is participating in that and hopefully it will all be over soon.”

Toovey claimed he had “no idea” what ASADA officials would be asking him about, but it seems clear that sports scientist Stephen Dank’s involvement with the club will be a central focus.

Toovey was confident in the club being cleared of any wrongdoing.

“Many months ago we did our own internal investigation and analysis of what we’ve been through,” he said.

“We’ve got proper processes and procedures in place, we think the club won’t have any issues.”

Toovey said he had yet to speak to Watmough, and said he was in no position to confirm whether his star forward’s phone had been seized and information downloaded.

A report in the Daily Telegraph claimed Watmough had his phone seized on the squad’s return to Australia following the round 13 clash against the Warriors.
