LA Clippers made hard work of their first-round series victory over the Mavericks, but they nevertheless got the job done in six games.

The Clippers went win-for-win with the Mavs, before closing it out with comfortable victories in games 5 and 6. Kawhi Leonard led the way, averaging 32.8 points, 10.2 rebounds and 5.2 assists. Paul George came good as the series wore on after a sluggish start. They struggled to combat prolific Mavericks linchpin Luka Dončić, however, and the Clippers will be busy devising a strategy to limit Denver Nuggets’ breakout playoffs star Jamal Murray.

As the Nuggets came from 3–1 down to beat the Jazz in seven games, the 23-year-old Murray created history with three straight games of 42-plus points (including two 50-point nights), and five-plus rebounds and assists. He was the first player since Michael Jordan to do so in the post-season.

Unlike Dončić, Murray has the luxury of a marquee player alongside him. Nikola Jokić was not at his best early in the series but has returned to elite level. He came up big in game 7, racking up 30 points and 14 rebounds, and hitting the series-winning shot in an 80–78 result.

The Clippers – the Championship favourites as of 3 September – should be well-rested after finishing their first-round assignment on Monday (AEST). Although their current momentum is valuable, the Nuggets could be weary after a gruelling series. The Clippers should take game 1 but the Nuggets are worth a look with a generous start.
