The Hurricanes are 1-1 so far. They kicked off with a 25-run victory over the Sixers in Alice Springs, with D’Arcy Short (51 off 40) and Qais Ahmed (4/12) leading the way.
But Hobart were humbled in a 52-run loss to the Stars in Moe on Sunday. They bowled adequately as the Stars reached 4/163 but were skittled for just 111. Clive Rose’s 32 not out of 18 was their high-score.
The Renegades have played twice – and are the only team in the BBL without a win to their name.
They went down to the Thunder by six wickets in Geelong after racking up 5/169. Shaun Marsh top-scored on Renegades debut with 42 off 33. The Melbourne outfit then fell just short in Perth, losing by 11 runs chasing 197. Beau Webster (67* off 37) and Kane Richardson (4/22) provided individual highlights.
The high-performing outfits each claimed a home win over the other last season.
Hurricanes veteran George Bailey’s 70 not out off 53 was not enough to prevent a six-wicket Renegades win in Melbourne. Aaron Finch (42 off 39) top-scored as the Renegades passed the target of 146 with four balls to spare.
The tables turned in Hobart later in the season, with Matthew Wade (58 off 30) and Jofra Archer (2/19) – neither of whom are currently in the Hurricanes’ line-up – spearheading a 16-run victory.
The Hurricanes went 6-1 in Tasmania during the 2018-19 BBL season. That could be the decisive factor with both teams under plenty of pressure to not fall too far behind the competition’s front-runners.
Look to Ben McDermott (Hurricanes) and Sam Harper (Renegades) as value options in the Top Batsman markets.
