Sydney Thunder vs Perth Scorchers Preview

Perth Scorchers are hunting a 7-0 start to their sizzling BBL|11 campaign. Sydney Thunder occupy third spot on the Big Bash ladder – but they are 11 points adrift on their upcoming opponents with a 2-3 record.

While the Scorchers have had several top performers, they have been riding Mitch Marsh’s game-breaking brilliance in recent games. The all-rounder has picked up three Player of the Match gongs in four appearances since returning from Australia A duty.

Marsh is already second on the BBL’s runscoring charts, backing up an unbeaten century against the Hurricanes with a blazing 86 off 53 in a 21-run win over the Renegades on Wednesday. He steered the Scorchers to an 8-wicket win with 19 balls left, taking 1/18 and scoring 42* off 33. Marsh shared in an unbeaten 99-run stand with fellow BBL|11 century-maker Colin Munro (58* off 32).

Kurtis Patterson, who plundered two half-centuries in the Scorchers’ first four games, has missed their last two outings with a quad complaint.

The Thunder have won only one of their last four – a 53-run thrashing of the Heat on December 19 led by Sam Billings (64 off 27) and Saqib Mahmood (4/22). They lost a rain-affected derby with the Sixers by 30 runs on Boxing Day. Set a revised target of 172 from 16 overs, the Thunder were bowled out for 142 with Jason Sangha (47 off 30) and Daniel Sams (28 off 11) the only batsmen to score more than 16.

Alex Ross (175 runs at 87.50) and Billings (169 runs at 42.25) have been the Thunder’s most consistent performers with the bat this season.
