Australia and England’s epic RWC rivalry

AUSTRALIA v ENGLAND AT THE WORLD CUP

1987 – Pool play, Sydney. Australia 19-6

A controversial start to the rivalry at Concord Oval when both teams played play their maiden Cup game. The scores are level midway through the second half when David Campese is awarded a try that he clearly didn’t ground. There’s no TMO to say otherwise.

1991 – Final, London. Australia 12-6

Will Carling’s England are seemingly goaded into attempting a liberated style of play at Twickenham, diluting their forward-based strengths. It gifts opportunities to the Australians, who scored the only try through prop Tony Daly to clinch the silverware.

1995 – Quarter-final, Cape Town. England 25-22

Rob Andrew’s 45m field goal in the dying minutes ousts the defending champions. It separates two teams who went toe-to-toe in a kick-dominated thriller, with Andrew’s 20 points with the boot trumping Michael Lynagh’s 17.

2003 – Final, Sydney. England 20-17

Jonny Wilkinson moves past Andrew as the owner of the most famous field goal in England history as Australia is beaten in a final that goes to extra time. England become the first European champions, denying the Wallabies a third crown.

2007 – Quarter-final, Marseille. England 12-10

It’s that man Wilkinson breaking hearts again, landing four penalties as the Wallabies suffer another quarter-final exit. The Wallabies scrum gets munched, making life miserable for George Gregan in his 139th and final Test.

2015 – Pool play, London. Australia 33-13

The only real Cup blowout between the nations, which ultimately sends shambolic hosts England crashing out in pool play. Bernard Foley scores two tries in his 28-point haul in one of the great individual Wallabies displays, kick-starting their surge to the final.
