Blood clot keeps Perenara in hospital

Hurricanes’ halfback TJ Perenara, who broke his left ankle in a friendly match against the Reds, has developed a blood clot and will remain in a Brisbane hospital for another week.

The 20-year-old Perenara, who in his first year of Super Rugby is being tipped as a future All Black, suffered his season-ending injury while scoring the last of the Hurricanes’ six tries late in the 36-7 win on the Sunshine Coast on June 15.

He underwent surgery next day and had been expected to return to Wellington on Friday.

But Hurricanes doctor Ian Murphy says he’s had to stay in hospital because of the blood clot.

“Now he has a post-operation complication, relating to the development of a blood clot in his left leg,” Murphy told the Dominion Post.

“TJ will stay on in Brisbane so it can be monitored but no further operations are planned. We are planning for him to come home later next week.”
