Ex-Reds man Johnson to start for Scotland

Sam Johnson has recovered from concussion and will make a starting debut for Scotland against Italy on Saturday in the Six Nations.

Two more uncapped players, both based in England, were picked in the reserves on Thursday; Leicester hooker Jake Kerr and Newcastle flanker Gary Graham.

Queenslander Johnson, named at inside centre, qualified for Scotland on residency in July.

But the former Queensland Reds and Gold Coast Titans under-20s representative had to withdraw from the squad for the November series after he badly injured his knee playing for Glasgow.

He was then concussed two weeks ago in a European Champions Cup match, which also finished with shoulder injuries to No. 8 Ryan Wilson and lock Jonny Gray.

Johnson and Wilson were passed fit, but Gray wasn’t, and the British and Irish Lions lock was replaced by Grant Gilchrist.

Johnson takes over from Pete Horne to partner Glasgow clubmate Huw Jones in midfield, putting aside the experiment of Adam Hastings at 10 and Finn Russell at 12 in the last Test in November, a flattering win over Argentina.

Kerr gets in with veteran Fraser Brown recovering from a knee injury, and Graham makes it after Jamie Ritchie was promoted to a start in the No. 7 jersey after Hamish Watson broke his hand in club action.

Watson, who has played in 11 of Scotland’s last 12 tests, may be available for the third round of the Six Nations.

Sean Maitland, recovering from a hamstring injury, was replaced on the wing by Tommy Seymour,

Scotland: Stuart Hogg, Tommy Seymour, Huw Jones, Sam Johnson, Blair Kinghorn, Finn Russell, Greig Laidlaw (captain); Ryan Wilson, Jamie Ritchie, Sam Skinner, Grant Gilchrist, Ben Toolis, Willem Nel, Stuart McInally, Allan Dell. Reserves: Jake Kerr, Jamie Bhatti, Simon Berghan, Gary Graham, Josh Strauss, Ali Price, Adam Hastings, Chris Harris.
