Former Wallabies captain Horwill retires

Former Wallabies captain James Horwill has announced he will retire from rugby union at the end of the season.

The former Queensland Reds lock is currently co-captain of English Premiership rugby side, the Harlequins.

Horwill skippered Australia during the 2011 World Cup and the 2013 series against the Lions. He was capped 62 times for the Wallabies between 2007 and 2016. He played 116 Super Rugby matches for the Reds.

Horwill moved to the Harlequins in 2015, but recent seasons have been marred by a series of injuries.

“I have given this great game everything I have and I feel I can no longer give what is needed to play at this elite level,” the 33-year-old lock said.

Horwill was named skipper after two seasons in south west London and has made 66 appearances, including one match against Leicester in which he continued playing despite having suffered a gory dislocated finger.

“Rugby has been a big part of my life for many years; never in my wildest dreams would I have envisaged the incredible journey it has taken me on,” he said.

“I’ve had the privilege and honour to not only play, but captain my state, country and club, Harlequins, on a number of occasions over my 14-year career.

“Winning the Super Rugby title at the Queensland Reds and being asked to captain my country are just some of the moments I will look back and cherish for a lifetime.”
