McMahon determined to lift against Pumas

Wallabies back-rower Sean McMahon is determined to deliver an improved performance in their Rugby Championship clash with Argentina, even if his coach doesn’t feel he needs to.

After a barnstorming performance in Australia’s loss to New Zealand last month No.8 McMahon marked himself down in their draw with South Africa last weekend.

“I was disappointed with my own performance,” said McMahon, who has spent time out with ankle, knee and wrist injuries this year.

“I corked my leg pretty early in the game which didn’t help get me get into the groove with regard to my running but it’s not an excuse.

“I tried to push through it but I probably didn’t get the ball carries that I wanted.

“The big thing for me at the moment is getting that consistency throughout games and week to week.”

The 23-year-old, who will play in Japan next year, did enough to impress Australia coach Michael Cheika however, who felt he was judging himself a little harshly.

Cheika believes the Pumas will target the Wallabies at the breakdown after the Springboks dominated them early in that area in Perth.

But the coach backed McMahon, along with skipper Michael Hooper and blindside flanker Ned Hanigan to get the job done.

“I didn’t think he was that bad,” Cheika said of McMahon.

“I’m a huge fan and if he doesn’t think he played that great I’m sure he’ll be ready to bounce back.”
