NZ’s Retallick out of second Test

A hamstring injury suffered in training has ruled All Blacks lock Brodie Retallick out of the second Test against France.

Sam Whitelock, who was not originally named in the squad for the match, will start in his place.

Retallick failed to complete an intense session at the AMI Stadium match venue on Thursday and was treated with ice to his upper left leg.

The 22-year-old was ruled out on Friday and is expected to be sidelined for three to four weeks, meaning he will also miss next week’s third Test against France.

Whitelock sat out the first Test because of a fractured finger but he took a full part in Thursday’s session and appeared untroubled.

He will partner Crusaders teammate Luke Romano in Saturday’s Test with the uncapped Hurricane lock Jeremy Thrush remaining in the reserves.

All Blacks: Israel Dagg, Ben Smith, Conrad Smith, Ma’a Nonu, Julian Savea, Aaron Cruden, Aaron Smith, Kieran Read (capt), Sam Cane, Liam Messam, Sam Whitelock, Luke Romano, Owen Franks, Dane Coles, Wyatt Crockett. Reserves: Andrew Hore, Tony Woodcock, Jeremy Thrush, Victor Vito, Piri Weepu, Beauden Barrett, Rene Ranger.
