James O’Connor will make his return for the Queensland Reds in Friday’s Super Rugby trial match against Melbourne Rebels in Gladstone.
The Wallabies utility last played for the Reds five years ago but is back with them after returning to Australian rugby following stints in England and France to earn a World Cup spot last year.
O’Connor is part of Brad Thorn’s 28-man squad to face the Rebels in one of just two pre-season hit-outs, although fellow Wallabies Izack Rodda and Jordan Petaia have been rested for the uncapped fixture.
So has Brumbies recruit Henry Speight, who has a fight on his hands to earn a starting spot on the wing this season despite the 31-year-old boasting 19 Test caps.
A logjam of backrowers will also compete for minutes before their first-round clash with the Brumbies on January 21, with the likes of Junior Wallabies talent and last season’s National Rugby Championship rising star Harry Wilson keen to press his case.
“We’re looking forward to travelling to Gladstone and playing some footy in front of our Queensland fans,” coach Brad Thorn said.
“It’s a good opportunity for the new guys to step up. It’ll be a good first hit-out and they’ll be up for the contest.”
