The Queensland Reds will bank on an almost exclusively homegrown list as coach Brad Thorn eyes the Super Rugby finals next year.
Gun trio Samu Kerevi, Scott Higginbotham and Sefa Naivalu have left for overseas clubs but an off-season signing spree has left Thorn with plenty at his disposal at Ballymore.
Wallabies comeback kid James O’Connor and veteran Brumbies winger Henry Speight have been added to plug those backline holes, while a staggering 90 per cent of the squad has come through Queensland’s junior system.
The club has dripped out re-signing announcements on an almost daily basis this month and finalised their 34-man squad on Wednesday.
Thorn, entering his third year at the helm, is confident allegiance and continuity will have an impact.
“The majority of this group have been together now for close to four years,” he said.
“The longer we can keep these same men together at Queensland, the sooner we’ll see success here.
“This is a great sign for the future of Queensland Rugby. It’s important we continue to develop this elite talent coming through.”
The Reds flirted with a breakthrough finals appearance last season, breaking a 15-year drought with a win in Durban but finished well off the pace with just six wins from 16 starts.
World Cup squad member Jordan Petaia (foot) lasted less than two games of this year’s campaign, but prop Taniela Tupou has signed a four-year deal to remain at the Reds long-term.
Japan-bound Kerevi was among the competition’s best players last season but the arrival of O’Connor and improvements in the remainder of the squad – that features a host of Australia’s best under-20 talent – has fuelled Thorn’s optimism.
“Nine of the lads have signed long-term deals to remain at Queensland and there’s more to come,” Thorn said.
“We saw signs of improvement last season; we did some really good things, but ultimately, we were disappointed not to be playing finals footy.”
