Strongest England RWC team to face Pumas

England will enter their crucial Rugby World Cup clash with Argentina in Tokyo on Saturday boosted by the return of Mako Vunipola and Jack Nowell.

Vunipola and Nowell missed the Pool C victories over Tonga and USA because of respective hamstring and ankle injuries but have been passed fit for the first major test of the group phase and have been named on the bench.

Coach Eddie Jones has named his strongest team for the two-time World Cup semi-finalists, making just one change to the side that secured a bonus point in the Sapporo opener with George Kruis replacing Courtney Lawes in the second row.

Loosehead prop Vunipola had surgery after tearing his hamstring from the bone in early May and has played just 17 minutes of rugby since.

Nowell has not played since the English Premiership final but will be unleashed as a hard-running impact substitute.

“We know Argentina are a very good team and our players will be ready for the game,” Jones said..

“Argentina is a completely different team from others we have played so far in the pool stages and are always about the physical contest.

“This week it’s about getting our game right, our set piece in a good place and making sure defensively we are organised and ready to find ways to score points against them.”

The Pumas have made one change to their starting line-up from their Tonga victory, bringing Javier Ortega Desio in at number eight in place of Tomas Lezana.

Having lost their opening match of the tournament to France, Argentina need a win to keep their hopes of progressing to the knockout stage in their own hands.

Coach Mario Ledesma has kept faith with five eighth Benjamin Urdapilleta after dropping veteran playmaker Nicolas Sanchez in the wake of the French defeat.

Sanchez, who was on the bench against Tonga, misses out altogether with the inexperienced Lucas Mensa offering cover for Urdapilleta.

Julian Montoya retains the starting hooker spot after scoring a hat-trick of tries in a man-of-the-match performance against Tonga so former skipper Agustin Creevy will win his Argentina record 88th cap from the bench.
