Sonny Bill Williams will get his first run of the season for the Chiefs in their last Super Rugby pre-season match against the Hurricanes in Taupo on Friday.
Williams has missed the first two warm-up games for his new team – a 38-36 win over the Highlanders in Queenstown and a first-up 36-0 hiding of the Melbourne Rebels in Geelong.
The rugby league convert was instead preparing for his New Zealand heavyweight bout, which he won by a technical knockout against American Clarence Tillman in Hamilton last week.
Chiefs coach Dave Rennie says Williams, who joined them from the Crusaders last year, is eager to finally take the field.
“Sonny has been training and running freely with no injuries and is looking forward to playing on Friday night,” he said.
Williams will take his place in a classy backline which features All Blacks Aaron Cruden and Richard Kahui and former internationals Brendon Leonard and Lelia Masaga.
The Chiefs launch their Super Rugby campaign against the Highlanders at Waikato Stadium on February 25.
