Wallaby Hodge signs long Rebels extension

Reece Hodge has signed a record-breaking extension with the Melbourne Rebels and ensured he’ll be a backline candidate for the Wallabies when the next Rugby World Cup rolls around.

Versatile back Hodge added a further three seasons to his existing Super Rugby deal – the longest extension in the Rebels’ history – taking him through to the end of 2023.

Melbourne’s all-time leading point-scorer said he was keen to build on a career at the same club that offered him a first professional contract in late 2015.

He wants to add to his 39 Tests and has a long-term goal of playing in the 2023 World Cup in France, his second stab at the global tournament after a chequered outcome this year.

The 25-year-old was suspended for three group games after being cited and found guilty of a dangerous tackle during the opening win over Fiji.

He returned to action on the wing in the quarter-final loss to England.

“Playing in a Rugby World Cup was my dream as a kid so to be able to say I’ve done that is an amazing feeling,” he said.

“However, winning a World Cup is the ultimate goal, so to have the opportunity to play my rugby in Australia for the next four years and hopefully earn another crack at that is extremely exciting.

“It’s been awesome to see the contingent of Rebels in the gold jersey increase year upon year.”

Hodge is arguably the most versatile back in Australia.

He has played on the wing, at inside and outside centre, and five-eighth for his country.

The Rebels have also fielded him in all those roles, along with appearances at fullback.

Hodge’s long-term retention is a bonus for Melbourne coach Dave Wessels, who will have to cover the loss of playmaking veterans Will Genia and Quade Cooper next season.

“Reece is a real team-first player and he continues to set the standard in terms of his work ethic and professionalism. His team mates feed off that and he is an excellent role model for the young players we have coming through,” Wessels said.
