Jesse Mogg’s breakthrough year has finished on a sour note with the deposed Wallabies fullback set to face season-ending shoulder surgery.
Mogg will undergo a shoulder reconstruction in the coming week after battling the lingering injury during Australia’s miserable start to The Rugby Championship.
The lanky Brumbies fullback’s big-kicking and long-striding Super Rugby exploits earned him the Wallabies’ No.15 jersey for the opening 47-29 and 27-16 Bledisloe losses to New Zealand.
But he was dumped to the bench by coach Ewen McKenzie following two shaky displays and replaced by Israel Folau who has since shone despite limited attacking opportunities in the custodian’s role.
Mogg was completely left out of the 23-man side which gutsed out an ugly 14-13 win over Argentina in the wet in Perth on Saturday night.
The 24-year-old, sidelined for three weeks midway through the Super Rugby season with his shoulder problem, will meet with his surgeon on Thursday.
It’s the latest injury blow for the Wallabies who will also be without incumbent winger Nick Cummins (broken hand) for their upcoming two-Test trip to South Africa and Argentina.
The loss of the two outside backs is set to put Brumbies flyer Joe Tomane in line for an international return after he made his Test debut against the British and Irish Lions in June.
While Tomane finished the 2-1 series loss starting on the left wing, the league convert was benched for the Brumbies’ finals campaign and had been overlooked by McKenzie for Test selection.
The former Melbourne Storm winger will be named in Australia’s 28-man tour squad on Tuesday morning along with returning captain James Horwill.
Horwill missed the past two matches with a hamstring strain and is no certainty to be fit to face the Springboks in Cape Town on September 29 but will fly out next Monday.
McKenzie is under pressure to recall veteran 59-Test prop Benn Robinson to stabilise a floundering scrum which is struggling to adapt to the new soft-engagement laws.
The Australian forwards have been overpowered by the All Blacks, Boks and Pumas in the past month but McKenzie is a big fan of the work-rate and mobility of loose-heads James Slipper and Scott Sio.
Slipper sustained a shoulder stinger against the Pumas but has been cleared to travel which may mean more time on the sidelines for Robinson.
The Wallabies, third on The Rugby Championship table, reassemble in Sydney on Saturday.
