Wallaroos tweak rugby side to take on NZ

It’s a case of master versus the apprentice with Wallaroos youngster Georgia Cormick tasked with taking on Black Ferns legend Kendra Cocksedge in Saturday’s Test in Perth.

Cormick will make her first start at halfback, lining up against Cocksedge, who beat the likes of All Blacks superstars Richie Mo’unga and Brodie Retallick to be named New Zealand rugby player of the year in 2018.

With 51 caps under her belt Cocksedge has won two World Cups but Wallaroos coach Dwayne Nestor said 23-year-old Cormick was up to the challenge.

“Georgia Cormick is a young girl who really impressed us against Japan so it’s her opportunity to challenge herself, to see how she goes,” Nestor said.

In other changes to the Wallaroos line-up that had a clean sweep against Japan, former skipper Liz Patu has been promoted into the starting 15 alongside fellow prop Eveyln Horomia.

Having never beaten world champion New Zealand in 16 attempts, Nestor said the team was out to show their improvement.

“This is a great opportunity for us this week to show off the improvements we have been working hard on since the Japan series,” he said.

“We’ve targeted some keys area of growth that we want to work on, and the squad has responded really well to those challenges.

“Bringing in some new faces in the starting 15 freshens us up and is a just reward for the hard work and performances of Georgia, Liz and Evelyn.”

The Wallaroos match is the first game of the double-header at Optus Stadium, with the Wallabies-All Blacks following.
