British police probe referee race claim

London police have launched an investigation into claims a Premier League referee directed “inappropriate language” at two Chelsea players in the match against Manchester United.

The initial allegation came from Chelsea on Sunday, but the complaint to police alleging racism was lodged a day later by the chairman of the Society of Black Lawyers.

Midfielder John Obi Mikel is believed to be one of the players who Chelsea say was targeted by referee Mark Clattenburg, whose language has reportedly been interpreted as being racially offensive.

The Metropolitan Police say they are investigating “alleged comments made during a football match between Chelsea FC and Manchester United FC”.

The police statement adds “we continue to work in partnership with Chelsea Football Club and the Football Association in order to consider any allegation”.
