Denmark vs Tunisia Preview
Following their failure to qualify for both the 2014 World Cup and Euro 2016, Denmark have now re-emerged as serious contenders on the international stage.
At the 2018 World Cup, a defensively resolute Danish unit hinted at what they were capable of, even if they lacked the attacking quality to exploit Christian Eriksen’s creative brilliance.
Eventual champions France were held to a goalless draw in the group stage and Denmark were unfortunate to meet the other finalist in the round-of-16, where a penalty shootout after a 1-1 draw saw the Danes exit at the hands of Croatia.
Eriksen was again the centre of attention at Euro 2020, but this time the world watched on in horror as he collapsed to the turf having suffered a cardiac arrest. Thankfully he would go on to make a full recovery and his teammates rallied in his absence – going all the way to the semi-finals, where the softest of penalty decisions for England helped the hosts defeat the Danes in extra-time.
They now arguably look even stronger.
A likely back three of Simon Kjaer – back from an ACL injury and playing regularly for Milan – Barcelona’s Andreas Christensen and Joachim Andersen is among the best backlines in Qatar and they can start by keeping Tunisia at bay.
There is quality on the flanks with Joakim Maehle, Andreas Skov Olsen, Mikkel Damsgaard and Rasmus Nissen competing for places. And in the centre a threesome of Eriksen, Tottenham’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Sevilla’s Thomas Delaney is packed with Uefa Champions League experience.
A lack of an elite striker remains an issue but the front-footed football being played under manager Kasper Hjulmand allows more attacking freedom and for the goals to be shared around. Eriksen is the man most likely to break Tunisian hearts, albeit in a low-scoring contest.
The Danes scored 30 times in ten World Cup qualifiers, winning their first nine to clinch top spot in Uefa Group F. They have also twice finished second in the top tier of their Nations League groups – taking four points off England and losing only to Belgium in 2020-21, and in the 2022 edition beating France home and away to finish second behind Croatia.
That new-found goalscoring threat will be necessary against a Tunisian side who look highly unlikely to match their goalscoring exploits of Russia 2018, when a side spearheaded by Wahbi Khazri – in the form of his life four years ago – managed five goals in defeats to England (2-1) and Belgium (5-2) and a 2-1 victory over Panama.
Now 31, Khazri is not quite the force he once was and his teammates are rarely offered the attacking licence to get up and support the Montpellier forward.
Nor is there much quality to back him up. Captain Youssef Msakni adds class on the opposite flank but Tunisia’s go-to approach against better opponents is to defend in numbers and hit them on the break.
It worked in qualifying but Tunisia were blessed with a weak group containing Equatorial Guinea, Zambia and Mauritania – and the Eagles of Carthage still lost 1-0 in Equatorial Guinea and drew 0-0 in Mauritania – and then struck lucky again in the African third-round play-off by drawing arguably the weakest possible opponent, Mali. Even then, a first-leg, first-half own-goal and sending off for Moussa Sissako shaped the tie, with Tunisia edging through 1-0 on aggregate.
Some encouraging friendly performances against Japan and Chile gave some hope, but September’s 5-1 defeat to Brazil in Paris showed just how far Tunisia remain behind the top teams.
