Some rivalries need to be oversold, talked up and hyped beyond belief, not England and Germany however, especially at the home of football Wembley.

These two have featured in some of the most famous footballing moments in history and it will be just over 25 years since they met at the old Wembley in Euro 1996, where the Germans won on penalties.

This will be their first match at a major tournament since Germany’s resounding 4-1 win in the 2010 World Cup which sparked the creation of goal line technology.

After struggling to break through the French backline in their tournament opener, the Germans flexed their attacking muscle in their remaining matches, scoring six.

Unfortunately, their rear-guard was breached twice by Portugal and twice again by a much less potent Hungarian attack.

It might give hope to an England attack that has largely fired blanks throughout Euro 2020 with Raheem Sterling scoring both of his side’s goals to date.

On paper there is no doubt that Gareth Southgate has the attackers at his disposal to match Germany goal for goal but on the pitch they have not delivered.

I expect the Germans to launch an early offensive, take a lead and force England to chase the match, opening it up and playing it on the visitor’s terms.

England may stick with them for a while but they have not shown enough in their matches to have a whole lot of confidence in it.
