Perth Glory coach Ian Ferguson says he’s content to put his contract talks on hold until his side have guaranteed themselves an A-League finals berth.

Just last month, Ferguson appeared to be on shaky ground after a period in which his team netted just one win from 11 outings.

But with the Glory now on a seven-game unbeaten run and sitting pretty in fourth spot on the table – just two points adrift of second spot – Ferguson is almost certain to earn the finals berth he requires for a contract extension.

Nevertheless, club owner Tony Sage wants to wait until the end of the season before making a final call on Ferguson – a situation the Scotsman is more than happy with.

“Look, he could have easily put me out of the door after the run we had and the abuse he and myself were copping,” Ferguson said on Thursday.

“I don’t want to go in there and put pressure on Tony and try to change the goalposts.

“He’s always said 27 games and top six, or if I can reach the top six before 27 games then hopefully we can try to sort something out.

“I’m keeping my feet firmly on the ground.

“I know where we were last year and I know what can happen in football so quickly.”

The Glory will be aiming to make it a club-record eight-game unbeaten run when they take on last-placed Gold Coast at nib Stadium on Monday.

But injuries to several key players are hampering Perth’s preparations.

Left-back Todd Howarth (groin) and midfielder Steven McGarry (corked thigh) are facing a race against time to be fit, while defender Dean Heffernan (knee) will return via the youth team or the senior side depending on Howarth’s progress.

Winger Travis Dodd (groin) is expected to return, but speedster Evan Berger is set to miss at least a month after re-injuring his hamstring.

Although Gold Coast sit last on the table, Ferguson said it was a danger game.

“They’re an attacking team, they’ve got great pace and great energy and great youth in there,” Ferguson said.

“There’s no fear with them. This is no easy game. I want to make that quite clear, this is going to be a very difficult game.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re on our toes … and hopefully we’ll get the three points.”
