Mexico vs Poland Preview
Qatar 2022 will be Mexico’s eighth consecutive World Cup finals appearance, but this version of El Tri will do well to match the achievements of their predecessors.
Mexico have made it through to – and exited at – the round of 16 in each of the last seven renewals of the World Cup, but to again reach the knockout stages they are likely to need at least a point, and probably all three, from their opener against Poland.
With a formidable-looking Argentina team expected to dominate Group C and Saudi Arabia odds-on to prop up the section, defeat in this opening encounter for either Mexico or Poland is likely to sound the death knell for their chances of progressing.
That is likely to result in a cagey start as neither team will want to risk too much if it leaves them open to a counter-attack that could put their entire World Cup adventure in peril.
In Mexico’s case, there is a lack of firepower to launch forwards in any case.
Manager Gerardo Martino prefers a front-footed, high-pressing style and at their best Mexico are led by star pair Raul Jimenez and Jesus Corona as part of a front three that also includes Napoli winger Hirving Lozano.
However, injuries across the frontline undermine Mexico’s chances and they could struggle to break down an experienced Polish backline.
The Eastern Europeans made a slow start to 2021 under new manager Paulo Sousa, making hard work of their early World Cup qualifiers and disappointing at the postponed Euro 2020 finals.
However, things started to come together in the second half of the year, with Poland earning a draw against England and, after Sousa had surprisingly jumped ship, eventually qualifying via the playoffs under their new head coach, Czeslaw Michniewicz.
It seems a happier camp now and while Poland were outclassed against Belgium in their recent Uefa Nations League campaign, home and away victories over Wales and a commendable draw away in the Netherlands gives Michniewicz something to build on.
He also has the significant advantage of some elite level, in-form talent to call upon.
Robert Lewandowski has maintained his incredible goalscoring form following his move from Bayern Munich to Barcelona, while goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny continues to impress at Juventus – providing Michniewicz with quality at both ends of the pitch.
What happens between the two ends remains a work in progress, with the former Legia Warsaw manager flexible in terms of formation and still looking to nail down his best team.
But progress has been steady under his tenure and Poland have attacking quality in Napoli’s Piotr Zielinski and Feyenoord’s Sebastian Szymanski, as well as plenty of midfield and defensive players with experience in top-level European leagues.
While once Lewandowski was starved of service for his national side, Poland are starting to get the balance right to make the most of their star man – and that could spell trouble for Mexico’s aspirations of qualifying for the knockout stages.
Expect a tight game, but Poland through Lewandowski can eventually be the difference.
