Newcastle have crafted a 2-2-2 record in a topsy-turvy start to the season, repeating the pattern of winning by a two-goal margin (against West Ham and Burnley), losing by three goals (against Brighton and Man United) and drawing 1-all on the road (against Spurs and Wolves). Jacob Murphy’s 89th-minute equaliser saw the Magpies depart Molineux Stadium with a point last week.
Everton are still clinging to top spot, but they are somewhat desperate for a positive result to avoid their 4-0-0 start going to waste. After drawing 2-all with Liverpool in Week 5, they were humbled 2-0 by Southampton. Lucas Digne was sent off in the 72nd minute but the game was all but out of reach by the stage, with the Saints scoring twice in the first half.
Newcastle have won just one of their last nine against Everton. Last season the Toffees prevailed 2-1 at St James’ Park but were held to a 2-all draw at home.
Last week was bitterly disappointing, but Everton remain excellent value to grab a win on the road in this one.
