Southampton have surged into contention as the Premier League’s preeminent overachiever courtesy of a five-match unbeaten streak. The fifth-place Saints are just three points off the EPL lead, bookending a Week 5 draw at Chelsea with wins over Burnley, West Brom and Everton to nil, and a 4-3 defeat of high-flying Aston Villa.

James Ward-Prowse chalked up a 12-minute brace against Villa, while Danny Ings sealed the result with his fifth goal of the season.

Newcastle remain in the bottom half but have won three and drawn two of their seven games, including a 2-1 upset of Everton last weekend. Callum Wilson scored both of the Magpies’ goals.

Newcastle have won four and drawn two of their last six against Southampton. Last season the Magpies prevailed 2-1 at home and 1-0 at Southampton.

Southampton are deserving favourites here but I’ll take the over as the best value on offer with both clubs scoring and conceding in double digits after seven games.
