Our Tip: Agnieszka Radwanska to win in straight sets.
Preview:
Radwanska wobbled quite severely against Yulia Putintseva in the first round before steadying the ship against Olga Govortsova in the second, in both matches winning the first set 6-0 before struggling to close it out. Against Putintseva, the fifth seed was dragged to a fifth; against Govortsova, Radwanska managed to stop the rot before it got that far, closing out the match 7-5 in the second set. Should Radwanska win the first set easily, in other words, watch out.
Pavlyuchenkova’s progress so far, by contrast, has been more sedate, the Russian winning 7-6(7) 6-4 against Teliana Pereira before a 6-2, 6-2 victory over Luxembourg’s Mandy Minella in the second round. Down to 30, and some way away now from her career-high ranking of 13, achieved in the summer of 2011, the once hotly-tipped Pavlyuchenkova is now rarely mentioned in discussions of WTA Slam contenders – even outside chances. Her inconsistency and persistent questions about her fitness have led many to write her off.
But in 2013 Pavlyuchenkova put together a relatively solid season, reaching the finals in Brisbane before losing to Serena Williams and in Seoul before losing to Agnieszka Radwanska and collecting titles in Monterrey and Oeiras (formerly Estoril). Still just 22, reaching the round of sixteen at the Australian Open would go a long way towards effecting a change of perspective upon her career, transforming the difficult 2011 and 2012 seasons into a sophomore slump rather than a lasting indictment of her potential.
Three of the four previous meetings between the pair have gone Radwanska’s way (2-1 on hard courts), with Pavlyuchenkova’s last victory coming back in 2009 at Indian Wells, her break-out tournament in which the Russian reached the semi-finals before losing to Ana Ivanovic.
Pavlyuchenkova last reached the fourth round of a major at the 2011 US Open and it’s not hard to understand why the Russian would struggle against Radwanska, whose defensive consistency and court-craft is seemingly tailor-made to throw an aggressive heavy-hitter like Pavlyuchenkova off her game. Should Radwanska display some of the patchy focus which got her into trouble in her previous rounds, Pavlyuchenkova might be in with a chance; otherwise, in cooler conditions, the Russian will need to execute close to perfectly to take a set from the fifth seed.
Radwanska and Pavlyuchenkova are scheduled second on the Hisense Arena around 12.30pm (1.30am GMT)
