Alex de Minaur vs Jannik Sinner Preview
The reward for Pablo Carreno Busta and Matteo Berrettini in this blockbuster is a maiden Australian Open quarter-final appearance.
Carreno Busta, the 19th seed, dipped out in the Round of 16 in 2018-19, while seventh seed Berrettini exited at this stage last year.
Both big guns have been pushed to the brink on their way to the fourth round.
Berrettini needed four sets to put away Brandon Nakashima and Stefan Kozlov in his first two assignments. He then watched a two-sets-to-love lead evaporate against 31st seed Carlos Alcaraz Garfia before his composure and class came to the fore in a fifth-set tiebreak.
The Wimbledon runner-up last year, Berrettini is gunning for his fifth Grand Slam quarter-final berth. As is two-time US Open semi-finalist Carreno Busta.
Carreno Busta cruised to a straight-sets win over Tomas Martin Etcheverry in the first round. But the 30-year-old endured a seesawing five-setter against world No.62 Tallon Griekspoor in the second round, before impressively outlasting Sebastian Korda 6-4 7-5 6-7 6-3.
The Spaniard is a consistent, relentless competitor who will pounce on any flat periods from Berrettini.
Berrettini is the more explosively brilliant and powerful of the two, with a more potent serve. But if Carreno Busta can keep moving him around with a superior ground game – as Alcaraz did – this match is destined to go deep.
