Aussie Duckworth makes Pune semis

Australia’s James Duckworth beat qualifier Roberto Marcora 6-3 7-6 (4) to book his place in the semi-finals of the Tata Open in Pune.

Duckworth, 28, will face Egor Gerasimov of Belarus, who beat fourth seed Soonwoo Kwon 4-6 7-6 (1) 6-4.

Second seed Ricardas Berankis also progressed with a 4-6 7-6 (4) 6-2 win over Yuichi Sugita of Japan.

The Lithuanian will face Czech Jiri Vesely, who saved two match points before edging past Ilya Ivashka 2-6 6-1 7-6 (11) in two hours and 30 minutes.

Elsewhere, Gael Monfils moved closer to a third Open Sud de France title with a 6-3 6-4 quarter-final win over Slovakia’s Norbert Gombos in Montpellier.

The French top seed, who previously won the tournament in 2010 and 2014, required one hour and 13 minutes to see off the world number 104.

Monfils will face Filip Krajinovic in the semi-finals after the Serbian beat France’s Gregoire Barrere 6-2 7-5 in 75 minutes.

David Goffin beat Piere-Hugues Herbet 6-4 7-6 (5) to set up a last-four clash with Canada’s Vasek Pospisil, who progressed when Richard Gasquet retired trailing 6-1 1-0.
