Australia’s Davis Cup players are set to endure a late finish for the second successive day at the Davis Cup in Madrid.
Nick Kyrgios and Belgium’s Steve Darcis were due to play the opening rubber of their decisive Group D tie at 6pm local time (0400 AEDT).
However Great Britain’s marathon 2-1 win against the Netherlands on Court Three, which saw all three rubbers go the distance, kept Australia and Belgium waiting to get on court.
Darcis and Kyrgios finally got their match under way at 8.20pm (0620 AEDT).
Victory for Australia will see them top Group D where they will meet Canada in the quarter-finals, once again in the late timeslot on Thursday (0400 Friday AEDT).
Kyrgios beat Darcis when the sides met in Brussels two years ago and after the pair complete their match, Australia No.1 Alex de Minaur will face world No.11 David Goffin.
The final doubles rubber will see John Peers and Jordan Thompson meet Sander Gille and Joran Vliegen.
Captain Lleyton Hewitt admitted after the win over Colombia the late finish was not ideal for his players.
“It’s a problem. It throws your sleeping pattern, eating, the guys have to get treatment after these matches and then a lot of times you’ve got to bounce back the next day as well,” Hewitt said.
“So it’s just another thing we’re dealing with this week.”
