Barty, Millman out of Eastbourne tennis

Australian No.1 Ashleigh Barty and John Millman have both tumbled out of the quarter-finals of Eastbourne tournament in the UK.

Top seed Caroline Wozniacki had no problems in dealing with Barty as the Dane advanced with a 6-4 6-3 triumph at the Wimbledon warm up tournament on Thursday.

Barty handed Wozniacki a tight opening set with a double-fault, but the 27-year-old Australian Open champion and world No.2 went on to dominate the second set and win in one hour and 19 minutes.

“We knew each other very well, I practised with Ash earlier this week,” Wozniacki said.

“I knew she was going to be tricky at times so I had to stay aggressive.”

Fellow Australian John Millman also fell in the quarter-finals, despite winning the first set of his match with world No.31 Marco Cecchinato.

The fourth-seeded Italian recovered solidly to finish off the Australian No.3 5-7 6-3 6-2.

Aryna Sabalenka also eliminated defending Eastbourne champion Karolina Pliskova in a remarkable turnaround as she fought back to make the semi-finals of the Eastbourne International 6-3 2-6 7-6 (7-5).

Sabalenka will play Agnieszka Radwanska in Friday’s final four after the Pole upset Latvian fifth seed Jelena Ostapenko 6-2 7-5.

Radwanska won the Eastbourne title as a teenager in 2008 and says she can relate to women like Sabalenka coming up through the ranks as she targets a place back inside the top 10 following an injury-hit year.

Meanwhile, in the men’s draw, third-seeded Canadian Denis Shapovalov fell to Germany’s Mischa Zverev 6-3 6-3.

And earlier on Thursday, Slovakian Lukas Lacko silenced the home crowd after he stopped Briton Cameron Norrie 6-3 6-4 to move into the semi-finals.
