I was very critical of Cilic heading into the first round, but credit where credit is due – he was outstanding against the very much in-form Moutet. He embarrassed the Frenchman in straight sets, and now faces another Frenchman in the 21st seed, Benoit Paire. It was a very typical performance by Paire in his opening round five-setter, with a roller coaster of emotions, effort, brilliance and complacency. Cilic holds a 4-1 record over Paire across their career, with the Croatian winning their last four encounters. In four of those five matches each player has won a set, and there’s no doubt Paire is good enough to claim one in this match too, but the way Cilic played in the first round I expect the Croatian to be too good in four or five.
