Bernard Tomic has been bundled out of the Canadian Open in Montreal in the first round by Roberto Bautista Agut.
Tomic was beaten 6-3 6-2 by Spanish 10th seed Bautista Agut in just over an hour.
Despite the defeat Tomic, who withdrew from the tournament in Washington and retired mid-match in Atlanta during the past month, is poised to make a move up the rankings from world No.95 into the 80s.
The 26-year-old Tomic had to qualify to get into the main draw for Canada’s ATP Masters 1000 event, which acts as one of the key lead-up events for the US Open.
The remainder of the Australian contingent will commence their campaigns on the Canadian hardcourts on Wednesday, spearheaded by Nick Kyrgios, who comes in full of confidence after claiming his sixth ATP title.
The 24-year-old will face Kyle Edmund in his opener with the winner to advance to a second-round meeting with eighth-seeded Daniil Medvedev, whom Kyrgios beat in the Washington Open final on Monday.
Alex de Minaur will face British qualifier Daniel Evans for the right to take on Spanish world No.2 Rafael Nadal in the round of 32.
Jordan Thompson was drawn to play American 12th seed John Isner while lucky loser John Millman will hope to make the most of his second chance against veteran Spaniard Feliciano Lopez.
Local hopes Milos Raonic and Denis Shapovalov recorded victories on centre court against their French opponents.
The 17th-seeded Raonic fired 16 aces in a routine 6-4 6-4 victory over Lucas Pouille while Shapovalov accounted for Pierre-Hugues Herbert 6-3 7-5.
Three-time grand slam champion Stan Wawrinka outgunned Bulgaria’s Grigor Dimitrov 6-4 6-4 with the Swiss star set to take on tournament sixth seed Karen Khachanov, who he has defeated in their two career encounters.
Former Australian Open finalist Jo-Wilfried Tsonga’s time in Montreal came to an abrupt end after a 6-2 6-2 loss to German Jan-Lennard Struff.
Others to advance to the second round were 13th-seeded Nikoloz Basilashvili, Richard Gasquet, Cristian Garin, Adrian Mannarino, Cameron Norrie and qualifiers Tommy Paul and Ilya Ivashka.
