Bulgaria edge closer to ATP Cup finals

Grigor Dimitrov has helped edge Bulgaria a step closer to the ATP Cup finals after his straight sets win over Radu Albot secured the tie for his country on Sunday.

The world No.20 looked in fine touch in Sydney, registering a 6-2 6-3 win over the Moldovan.

Earlier Dimitar Kuzmanov gave Bulgaria the perfect start with a 6-1 7-5 win over Alexander Cozbinov.

The victory leaves the Bulgarians 2-0 for the competition after defeating Great Britain in their opening tie.

They’ll face the David Goffin-led Belgium on Tuesday night, with a win securing the top place in Pool C and a spot in the last eight.

Even a loss won’t rule them out of the elimination rounds, the two best-performed second-placed teams will also join the six group winners in the quarter-finals.

Dimitrov is edging back to his best after shoulder issues and poor form saw him slump from a career high of No.3 in the world to No.78 before last year’s US Open.

He rocketed back up the rankings with a strong finish to the year, including a run to the US Open semi-finals after beating Roger Federer.
