Gallant Stosur bows out of Swiss Open

A gallant Samantha Stosur has been eliminated in the quarter-finals of the Swiss Open in Gstaad.

The Australian was beaten by tournament top seed Alize Cornet in two tight sets, 6-4 7-6 (7-2).

The world No.48 won just five points more than Stosur, the tournament’s No.5 seed, and will now meet Canadian Eugenie Bouchard in the semi-finals.

Bouchard beat Russia’s Veronika Kudermetova 7-5 6-0 and was delighted with the win.

“I’m happy I get to play another match,” the 24-year-old Bouchard told reporters.

“I’m not really comparing or thinking about the past like you guys always like to bring up. I have a match (Saturday) and that’s great.”

Mandy Minella secured a place in her first WTA Tour semi-final since coming back from maternity leave with a straight-sets win over Sara Sorribes Tormo.

Luxembourg’s Minella, who returned to the tour in February after giving birth in October last year, continued where she had left off – after beating second seed Johanna Larsson – to defeat the Spaniard 6-1 6-2.

Marketa Vondrousova will be her semi-final opponent, the Czech player coming through 6-2 6-3 against Evgeniya Rodina of Russia.
