Garin, Opelka survive to claim ATP titles

Third-seeded Cristian Garin has halted Italian qualifier Gianluca Mager’s Rio Open run with a hard-fought victory in the final on Sunday.

Chilean Garin prevailed 7-6 (7-3) 7-5 to claim his fourth title victory, second of the month and first at ATP 500 level.

Garin had made the final by defeating Croatian Borna Coric 6-4 7-5 in a rain-delayed semi-final that was completed earlier in the day.

The title victory came on the heels of Garin’s three-set win over Diego Schwartzman in the Cordoba Open final on February 9.

Mager was also playing his second match of the day, having outlasted Hungary’s Attila Balazs 7-6 (7-4) 4-6 7-6 (7-2).

The Italian had surprised top seed and world No.4 Dominic Thiem in the quarter-finals on Saturday.

At the Delray Beach Open in Florida, Reilly Opelka worked overtime and won two three-set matches on Sunday, topping Yoshihito Nishioka of Japan in the final.

Fourth-seeded Opelka won the decider 7-5 6-7 (4-7) 6-2 to claim his second ATP Tour title.

He went the distance to defeat second-seeded Milos Raonic of Canada in their rain-delayed semi-final before he returned to the court a few hours later to face Nishioka.

The 211cm Opelka served 46 aces on Sunday: 19 against Raonic and 27 against Nishioka.
