Gavrilova, Barty clinch Indian Wells wins

Australian Daria Gavrilova has eased into the third round at the WTA event in Indian Wells with a 6-2 6-2 victory over Romanian Mihaela Buzarnescu.

Gavrilova required just over an hour to secure victory in California, winning 82 per cent of first-serve points and more than half of her break opportunities.

She’ll now play either American Sofia Kenin or Ukrainian Elina Svitolina.

Compatriot Ashleigh Barty followed suit with a 6-4 6-4 win over German Tatjana Maria in just under 90 minutes, and will now face American Jennifer Brady.

The world No.12 hit five aces and won more than half of all return points.

Earlier, Sloane Stephens became the first big women’s seed to fall, with the world No.4 outclassed 6-3 6-0 by Switzerland’s Stefanie Voegele.

Voegele won four of five previous meetings against the former US Open champion and triumphed at a canter.

The 28-year-old world No.109 started well by breaking Stephens’ serve twice to take the first set and then raced through six straight games in the second.

“It’s one of my biggest wins. She didn’t play her best and maybe she doesn’t like my game but that’s tennis,” Voegele said.

Two-time grand slam champion Garbine Muguruza also cruised to a 6-1 6-3 victory over American Lauren Davis for a place in the third round.

The Spaniard could renew her rivalry with another grand slam champion in Serena Williams, who faces Victoria Azarenka.

Johanna Konta eased into the third round with a 6-0 6-2 win over 27th seed Su-Wei Hsieh, saving all 12 break points against her in a dominant performance.
