Hives thrives in US Open qualifying round

Zoe Hives became the latest Australian to book a second-round berth at the US Open qualifying when she scored a fine win over Switzerland’s Stefanie Vogele.

Hives, who reached the second round of this year’s Australian Open after claiming the notable scalp of American tour veteran Bethanie Mattek-Sands, came through 6-4 4-6 6-2 against sixth-seeded Vogele in New York on Tuesday.

The 22-year-old right-hander now faces American Caroline Dolehide, who progressed when compatriot Shelby Rogers retired early in the second set of their domestic clash.

Fellow Aussies Ellen Perez, and Kaylah McPhee are also in qualifying action at Flushing Meadows on Tuesday, due to face Switzerland’s Conny Perrin and American Nicole Gibbs respectively.

In the men’s draw, John-Patrick Smith, 25th seed James Duckworth and Akira Santillan carry the Australian flag, all hoping to move one step closer to a prized spot in the main draw of the season’s final grand slam.
