Preview:

Raonic achieved his career high ranking of World No. 10 in August of 2013, whilst Dimitrov also enjoyed a breakthrough year, entering into the World’s Top 30 for the first time and winning his maiden title at the Stockholm Open.

It took Raonic four sets to defeat Daniel Gimeno-Traver who is ranked as the current World No. 77, in the opening round of the Australian Open. The 23-year-old Canadian then defeated Victor Hanescu in straight sets, despite a tight first set that resulted in a tiebreaker. Dimitrov on the other hand, is yet to drop a set in his Australian Open campaign and if he can overcome Raonic it will be the first time in 13 attempts that the 22-year-old has ventured past the Round of 32 at a major.

It will be the first time Dimitrov enters into the Australian Open with new coach Roger Rasheed by his side.“He’s someone who is going to push me around and we’ll have that mutual respect. But at the same time, he’s going to be tough but fair, which I think is important,” Dimitrov said of the partnership. “We’ve been together for four months now so we’re a work in progress. There are a lot of things to come and we both believe in it. It’s exciting times ahead,” he continued.

The head to head record between the two is tied at 1-1, with Dimitrov winning their most recent encounter in straight sets in Brisbane 2013. However it is Raonic who has the overall upper hand on hard courts with a 96-39 win-loss record on the surface compared to Dimitrov who has a 51-46 win-loss record on hard courts.

Raonic serve will be a pivotal factor in the match and it may just help him over the line on the hard and fast courts at Melbourne Park.

The winner of the match will take on the winner of Benoit Paire and Roberto Bautista Agut in the fourth round on Monday.

Raonic and Dimitrov are scheduled to play on Margaret Court Arena at about 4:00pm (5:00am GMT) on 18 January 2014.
