Murray delays tennis return from injury

Britain’s Andy Murray has further delayed his return to tennis but hopes to be fit in time for Wimbledon next month.

The 31-year-old, who won the grass court grand slam title in 2013 and 2016, required hip surgery in Australia in January.

He has not played a match since last year’s Wimbledon and was due to return at the s-Hertogenbosch Libema Open event in the Netherlands on June 11.

However, Murray says it has taken longer than expected for his hip to be match-fit but remains hopeful of beginning preparations for Wimbledon.

“I am not quite ready to return. I am still aiming to play in the coming weeks, but I want to be 100 per cent when I do return,” said Murray.

“I’ve been out close to a year now, which is a lot longer than me or any of my team expected, but I’m getting closer to playing again.

“I’ve started training a few days ago and am hoping to make my comeback during the grass-court season.”
