Preview:

Li considered retiring after Wimbledon last summer, but she’ll surely be pleased to have thought twice about that decision. On Tuesday the former French Open champ will once again be competing in the quarter-finals of the Australian Open, where she’ll take on resurgent Italian Pennetta.

Li saved a match point against Lucie Safarova in round three but otherwise hasn’t looked in danger of bowing out in Melbourne. She began with fairly routine triumphs over Ana Konjuh and Belinda Bencic, and saved her best performance of the tournament for round four, where she dismantled Ekaterina Makarova for a 6-2 6-0 victory.

Pennetta’s displays over the past week have been hugely encouraging. The Italian is now through to her second successive slam quarter-final, as she reached the semi-finals in Flushing Meadows last year. She’s already bettered her previous best (fourth round) performance in Melbourne and currently has a lot of momentum.

The World No. 29 hasn’t had the easiest draw at this event. She began by beating Alexandra Cadantu and rising star Monica Niculescu in straight sets. She then defeated hard court expert Mona Barthel; again in two sets. Pennetta had a nervy moment of her own in the fourth round however where she scraped past ninth seed Angelique Kerber 6-1, 4-6, 7-5.

Li and Pennetta haven’t stood on opposite sides of the court for a singles match since 2010, when they met in Sydney. At the moment the pairing are level at 2-2 in their head to head and have taken turns at winning ever since Li got the better of Pennetta in Cvitanova in 2000.
